Design and benchmark tests of a hydrophone array system for whale echolocation recordings

This paper describes in depth the design and application considerations of a computer based measurement system enabling 1 MS/s simultaneous sampling of 47 hydrophones for cross sectional recordings of echolocation beams of toothed whales (Odontocetes). An earlier prototype version of the system has previously only been presented as a brief proof of principle that did not offer a complete descripti

Workers’ representation and labour conflict at company level : the Italian binary and the Swedish ternary system

This Article critically evaluates the recent trends in Italian industrial relations in order to highlight the clash between Italian constitutional principles and the autonomous development of self-regulation as for the relationship between representation, conflict and collective agreement. By conducting a comparative analysis with the Swedish model, the article argues that the constitutional princ

The gamma-tubulin meshwork as a therapeutic target

Cancer is a heterogeneous disease and treatment regime is dependent on type and location of the tumor. Several of the commonly used chemotherapeutics target the functions of the microtubules. One of the major problems with these drugs is the adverse effects associated with their use. Another problem many of the chemotherapeutics today face is resistance. Therefore there is a constant need for deve

Merging clinical chemistry biomarker data with a COPD database - building a clinical infrastructure for proteomic studies

Background: Data from biological samples and medical evaluations plays an essential part in clinical decision making. This data is equally important in clinical studies and it is critical to have an infrastructure that ensures that its quality is preserved throughout its entire lifetime. We are running a 5-year longitudinal clinical study, KOL-Örestad, with the objective to identify new COPD (Chro

How bumblebees use lateral and ventral optic flow cues for position control in environments of different proximity

Flying insects frequently navigate through environments of different complexity. In this study, buff-tailed bumblebees (Bombus terrestris L.) were trained to fly along tunnels of different widths, from 60 to 240 cm. In tunnel widths of 60 and 120 cm, bumblebees control their lateral position by balancing the magnitude of translational optic flow experienced in the lateral visual field of each eye.

Modal Analysis of the Ultrafast Dynamics of Optical Nanoresonators

We propose a semianalytical formalism based on a time-domain resonant-mode-expansion theory to analyze the ultrafast temporal dynamics of optical nanoresonators. We compare the theoretical predictions with numerical data obtained with the FDTD method, which is commonly used to analyze experiments in the field. The comparison reveals that the present formalism (i) provides deeper physical insight o

How do selected crop rotations affect soil organic carbon in boreo-temperate systems? A systematic review protocol

Background: Soils are important global carbon pools that are under threat from intensive land use through a variety of agricultural practices. Sustainable management of agricultural soils may have the potential to mitigate climate change through increased carbon sequestration and increase their fertility. Among management practices to increase carbon sequestration, crop rotation designs have often

Usefulness of serial electrocardiograms for diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the automated detection of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by utilizing artificial neural networks was improved by using a previous electrocardiogram (ECG) in addition to the current ECG. A total of 4,691 ECGs were recorded from patients admitted to an emergency department due to suspected AMI. Of these, 902 ECGs, in which diagnoses of AMI were

A confident decision support system for interpreting electrocardiograms

Computer-aided interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECGs) is widespread but many physicians hesitate to rely on the computer, because the advice is presented without information about the confidence of the advice. The purpose of this work was to develop a method to validate the advice of a computer by estimating the error of an artificial neural network output. A total of 1249 ECGs, recorded with

Intelligent computer reporting 'lack of experience' : A confidence measure for decision support systems

The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of developing artificial neural networks that are able to provide confidence measures for their diagnostic advice. Computer-aided decision making can improve physician performance, but many physicians hesitate to use these 'black boxes'. If we are to rely upon decision support systems for such tasks as medical diagnosis it is essential that

Automated interpretation of myocardial SPECT perfusion images using artificial neural networks

The purpose of this study was to develop a computer-based method for automatic detection and localization of coronary artery disease (CAD) in myocardial bull's-eye scintigrams. Methods: A population of 135 patients who had undergone both myocardial 99mTc-sestamibi rest-stress scintigraphy and coronary angiography within 3 mo was studied. Different image data reduction methods, including pixel aver

A study of the mean field approach to knapsack problems

The mean field theory approach to knapsack problems is extended to multiple knapsacks and generalized assignment problems with Potts mean field equations governing the dynamics. Numerical tests against 'state of the art' conventional algorithms shows good performance for the mean field approach. The inherently parallelism of the mean field equations makes them suitable for direct implementations i
