U46619 (a thromboxane A2 mimetic) induces airflow obstruction and airway plasma extravasation in the guinea pig: the role of histamine, cyclooxygenase metabolites, leukotrienes and PAF

The aim of the present study was to characterize the airway effects of U46619, a stable thromboxane A2 mimetic, instilled into the trachea of guinea pigs in vivo, and to investigate the role of different mediators in these effects. The airflow obstruction was evaluated by measurement of airway insufflation pressure (P1) and plasma extravasation by quantification of Evans Blue dye (EBD) in airways.

Menorrhagia and minor bleeding symptoms in women on oral anticoagulation.

Background Oral anticoagulation (OA) is a common treatment with a known risk of fatal or major bleeding, but also minor bleeding symptoms and menorrhagia can cause substantial discomfort and necessitate medical or surgical interventions. The extent of these side effects is however not previously reported. The objective of this study is to assess the frequency of minor bleeding symptoms and menorrh

Kön, makt och religion: En ohelig allians

Religion and religious ideologies interact with other power structures in society. Therefore religious factors should be considered in intersectional analyses, along with factors such as class, gender and ethnicity. The suggested tool of religious proximity is, as an example, applied to an analysis of women as religious leaders in the context of religious fundamentalism.

Essential role for CD103 in the T cell-mediated regulation of experimental colitis

The integrin CD103 is highly expressed at mucosal sites, but its role in mucosal immune regulation remains poorly understood. We have analyzed the functional role of CD103 in intestinal immune regulation using the T cell transfer model of colitis. Our results show no mandatory role for CD103 expression on T cells for either the development or CD4(+)CD25(+) regulatory T (T reg) cell-mediated contro

Microembolic signal counts increase during hyperbaric exposure in patients with prosthetic heart valves

BACKGROUND: Patients with prosthetic heart valves have an increased risk of thromboembolic events, and transcranial Doppler sonography reveals microembolic signals. Whereas microembolic signals were initially assumed to be of particulate matter, recent studies suggest that they are partially gaseous in origin. If this is true, alteration of environmental pressure should change microembolic signal

J/psi production in Au-Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

First results on charm quarkonia production in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The yield of J/psi's measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au-Au reactions at roots(NN) = 200 GeV is analyzed as a function of collision centrality. For this analysis we have studied 49.3x10(6) minimum bias Au-Au reactions

Elastic J/psi production at HERA

Cross sections for elastic production of J/psi mesons in photoproduction and electroproduction are measured in electron proton collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 55 pb(-1). Results are presented for photon virtualities Q(2) up to 80 GeV2. The dependence on the photon-proton centre of mass energy W-gamma p is analysed in the range 40

Interfaces of control. Technocratic and socio-ideological control in a global management consultancy firm

This paper investigates a variety of forms of management control in a large management consultancy company. The very high level of compliance with corporate objectives among employees is highlighted and singled out as a phenomenon worth exploring. The company exhibits a rich variety of various formal control devices focusing on financial issues as well as human resources. The paper shows that thes

Scandinavian storminess since about 1800

We study the history of storminess in Northern Europe, as derived from local pressure observations in Lund since 1780 and Stockholm since 1820 ( Sweden). At both stations barometer readings were made three times per day, morning, midday and evening, and after about 1850 at fixed observation hours. We use four common storminess indices: annual number of deep lows ( p < 980 hPa), the annual 95th and

Comparison of Surface Properties of Human IgA, IgE, IgG and IgM Antibodies with Identical and Different Specificities

In this paper, the authors report the use of liquid-liquid partition chromatography (LLPC) in an aqueous polyethylene glycol (PEG)/dextran two-phase system to compare the surface properties (partition properties) of human antibodies and fragments thereof. The surface properties of all the monoclonal antibodies of different classes and subclasses investigated were within the same broad range as tha

A number of working children in several regions over the world are mobilising to fight for better working conditions and to gain their rights according to how they interpret the Child Rights Convention (UNCRC) from 1989. Despite the increasing focus on child participation, their approaches and their demands are in many aspects controversial and they are often met with suspicion among diverse actor

Changes in serum lipids and postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations after consumption of beverages with beta-glucans from oats or barley: a randomised dose-controlled trial

Objectives: To investigate side by side the effects on serum lipoproteins and postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations of beverages enriched with 5 or 10 g of beta-glucans from oats or barley. Design and setting: An 8-week single blind, controlled study with five parallel groups carried out at two centres under identical conditions. Interventions: During a 3-week run-in period all subject
