Quasi-Herglotz functions and convex optimization

We introduce the set of quasi-Herglotz functions and demonstrate that it has properties useful in the modelling of non-passive systems. The linear space of quasi-Herglotz functions constitutes a natural extension of the convex cone of Herglotz functions. It consists of differences of Herglotz functions and we show that several of the important properties and modelling perspectives are inherited by

Does managers' motivation matter? Exploring the associations between motivation, transformational leadership, and innovation in a religious organization

Religious organizations are social systems operating in a complex and changing environment. By looking to an authority beyond themselves, religious organizations have comparatively little control over defining their own goals. In this juggling between sticking to the ultimate goal of an organization and adapting to complex changing environments, that is, in the juggling between tradition and renew

Six commonly used empirical body surface area formulas disagreed in young children undergoing corrective heart surgery

Aim: Formulas for empirical body surface area (BSA), which is used to estimate body size and standardise physiological parameters, may disagree in children. We compared six commonly used BSA formulas—Du Bois, Boyd, Costeff, Haycock, Meban and Mosteller—in a surgical cohort. Methods: This retrospective single-centre cohort study comprised 68 children who had corrective heart surgery at Skåne Univer

Investigating ultrafast carrier dynamics in perovskite solar cells with an extended π-conjugated polymeric diketopyrrolopyrrole layer for hole transportation

Here, we show a new diketopyrrole based polymeric hole-transport material (PBDTP-DTDPP, (poly[[2,5-bis(2-hexyldecyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-3,6-dioxopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-diyl]-alt-[[2,2′-(4,8-bis(4-ethylhexyl-1-phenyl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene)bis-thieno[3,2-b]thiophen]-5,5′-diyl]])) for application in perovskite solar cells. The material performance was tested in a solar cell with an optim

Handbook on Good Treaty Practice

This Handbook aims to provide practical guidance on good treaty practice. It presents a range of examples from the practice of several States and international organisations and explains the actions that need to be taken to create a new treaty, bring it into force, operate it, amend it and wind it up, on both the international and the domestic plane. It also explores what constitutes good treaty p

Scores for sepsis detection and risk stratification – construction of a novel score using a statistical approach and validation of RETTS

Background To allow early identification of patients at risk of sepsis in the emergency department (ED), a variety of risk stratification scores and/or triage systems are used. The first aim of this study was to develop a risk stratification score for sepsis based upon vital signs and biomarkers using a statistical approach. Second, we aimed to validate the Rapid Emergency Triage and Treatment Sys

As Long as it Glitters : A Re-evaluation of the Mixed Silver Hoards of Bornholm, Denmark

This chapter considers the phenomenon of mixed hoards, containing both minted and non-minted silver, from the Baltic island of Bornholm. Rather than following a general Scandinavian trend towards coin-only hoards, on Bornholm mixed hoards dominated until the twelfth century. They are often interpreted as signifying a somewhat primitive bullion economy, within which coins, ingots, jewellery, and sc

Why and how to investigate the role of protein phosphorylation in ZIP and ZnT zinc transporter activity and regulation

Zinc is required for the regulation of proliferation, metabolism, and cell signaling. It is an intracellular second messenger, and the cellular level of ionic, mobile zinc is strictly controlled by zinc transporters. In mammals, zinc homeostasis is primarily regulated by ZIP and ZnT zinc transporters. The importance of these transporters is underscored by the list of diseases resulting from change

Oxidative damage to lipids is rapidly reduced during migratory stopovers

Most migrating birds need to stopover in between flights in order to refuel. Lately, additional purposes of stopover have been suggested, including physiological recovery from metabolically demanding migratory flight. One apparently unavoidable, but harmful physiological effect of migratory flight is increased oxidative damage to lipids and proteins. We here, for the first time, tested whether mig

Super-Earth ingestion can explain the anomalously high metal abundances of M67 Y2235

We investigate the hypothesis that ingestion of a terrestrial or super-Earth planet could cause the anomalously high metal abundances seen in a turn-off star in the open cluster M67, when compared to other turn-off stars in the same cluster. We show that the mass of the convective envelope of the star is likely only 3.45 × 10-3 M⊙, and hence 5.2 M⊙ of rock is required to obtain the observed 0.128

Α 10-gigawatt attosecond source for non-linear XUV optics and XUV-pump-XUV-probe studies

The quantum mechanical motion of electrons and nuclei in systems spatially confined to the molecular dimensions occurs on the sub-femtosecond to the femtosecond timescales respectively. Consequently, the study of ultrafast electronic and, in specific cases, nuclear dynamics requires the availability of light pulses with attosecond (asec) duration and of sufficient intensity to induce two-photon pr

Essays on Expectations : Information, Formation and Outcomes

The first chapter investigates the relationship between economic media sentiment and individuals’ expectations and perceptions about economic conditions. We test if economic media sentiment Granger-causes individuals’ expectations and opinions concerning economic conditions, controlling for macroeconomic variables. We develop a measure of economic media sentiment using a supervised machine learninThe first chapter investigates the relationship between economic media sentiment and individuals’ expectations and perceptions about economic conditions.

Global catchment modelling usingWorld-Wide HYPE (WWH), open data, and stepwise parameter estimation

Recent advancements in catchment hydrology (such as understanding catchment similarity, accessing new data sources, and refining methods for parameter constraints) make it possible to apply catchment models for ungauged basins over large domains. Here we present a cutting-edge case study applying catchment-modelling techniques with evaluation against river flow at the global scale for the first ti

Label-free acoustophoretic enrichment of mononuclear cells from blood

We are reporting an efficient, label-free and continuous separation of mononuclear cells (MNC), from blood using microchip acoustophoresis. In standard PBS buffer, MNCs and red blood cells (RBC) display overlapping acoustophoretic mobilities which compromise separation of these cell types from each other. In this paper we capitalize on the fact that MNC and RBC display different acoustophysical pr
